Description
The City of Roanoke is seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to fill a vacant Signal Technician Level III position in our Public Works/ Transportation Division/ Traffic Signal Shop.

Traffic Engineering Signal operation focuses on 24/7/365 maintenance, operation, and repair of the City's 157 traffic signals and emergency signals at Fire Stations, emergency vehicle preemption systems, and operation and maintenance of 23 school location zone flashers. Additionally, the Signal Shop consists of six personnel responsible for maintaining all 792 city-owned streetlight fixtures, bridge lighting, and installing and replacing holiday decorations and American flags (seasonally). The use of new technologies in vehicle detection and communication systems and new signal equipment are essential to our signal operations.

Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Recommends and designs modification of traffic signal controller, relays, vehicle detection systems, and other apparatus
• Perform traffic signal installation, operation, and repairs, including controllers, electronic timing devices, street lighting and school flasher systems, emergency Opticom systems, and other electrical and electronic equipment.
• Erects poles, runs necessary wiring, hangs overhead lights and other devices.
• Installs and repairs various vehicle detectors such as video, radar, infrared, and others.
• Replaces electronic components.
• Installs and maintains aerial and underground traffic signal equipment, school zone flashers, and communication cables.
• Maintains standby status on rotation and makes emergency repairs to equipment after hours.
• Creates "On Call" schedule and informs all necessary parties.
• Keeps records of work and makes reports to supervisor.
• Performs quarterly and annual reviews of staff.
• Assists in procuring routine materials and maintaining inventories.
• Recommends and makes modifications to signal/streetlight equipment.
• Installs, maintains, and programs automated traffic signal control equipment and systems.
• Inspects work in progress and completion and verifies safety precaution adherence.
• Assists in preparing sketches, plans, and specifications for new construction, installation, and major electrical systems and equipment repairs.
• In the absence of the supervisor, directs activities of the division when authorized.
• Assists contractors and utility companies during new construction.
• Assists with implementing, developing, and maintaining computerized timing and phase sequence for traffic signals and coordination systems.
• Perform as a lead technician in maintenance and signal operations and other signal-related improvement projects.
• Assists with signal installations meeting MUTCD standards.
• Operates heavy and light snow removal.
• Trains new staff on signal and lighting-related equipment.

Typical Qualifications
Performs skilled and technical work installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing traffic signals and other control devices. Serves as lead technician and may direct activities of the division in the absence of supervisor. High school diploma or GED supplemented by technical experience in electrical or electronic repair; minimum of five years related experience and training in the construction and maintenance of municipal traffic signals and coordinated systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. VDOT Intermediate Workzone Certification is required. Must possess a CDL or obtain within six (6) months of employment. Possession of Traffic Signal Level III certification from the International Municipal Signals Association (IMSA) within two years of employment.
A valid app-Ability to perform repairs, installation, etc., from bucket truck heights up to 40 ft.
