General Statement of Duties/Supervision
To qualify as a Lateral Firefighter, candidates must have been employed at least 36 months and successfully completed probation as a full-time, paid employee of a firefighting agency. Additionally, Lateral candidates must have current IFSAC Firefighter I certification and Washington State or Nationally Registered EMT Certification. Candidates must successfully pass Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within three months of their start date.
Candidates with less than three years of paid experience and those who do not possess the minimum qualifications should apply as an Entry Level Firefighter.
Firefighters provide emergency assistance and protective services to people in our community. They are trained and equipped to protect life and property threatened by disaster, fire, explosion, hazardous materials, illness, accidents and other hazards. Firefighters perform rescue and emergency medical services in accordance with Thurston County Medic One protocols. Work may involve environments that are dangerous to life and health. Strenuous physical exertion under stressful conditions may be required during training and emergency scene operations. The work environment includes, but is not limited to, confined spaces, temperature extremes, inclement weather, extreme heights, exposure to diseases, and violent acts.
The career firefighter also conducts or participates in non-emergency services, including training, pre-incident planning, fire/injury prevention, public education, building inspections, public relations, facility and equipment maintenance, apparatus and equipment checks, report writing, and other activities.
Supervision: Direct supervision is from a superior firefighter, Fire Lieutenant, or Fire Captain. Performance evaluations are conducted by a Company Officer.

Accountability: Firefighters are accountable for maintaining public safety through fire suppression and prevention, basic life support emergency medical response, and for compliance with departmental or other policies, procedures, regulations and/or codes.

Northwest Firefighter Trust- Medical, Dental and Vision: The City pays 100% for the employee and 85% for eligible dependents.
Employee + Spouse = 100%
Employee +Spouse + Dependent = 100%
Additional dependents covered at 85%
The Trust also offers $20,000 basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.
Vacation: Fire employees earn 104 hours of paid annual leave during their first year of employment. This rate increases with years of service.
Sick Leave: Sick leave is accrued at the rate of 24 hours per month.
Holidays: 8 Paid holidays which include Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, 9/11 Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Retirement: Firefighters are eligible for the State of Washington Public Employees Retirement System - LEOFF 2. Both the City and the employee contribute to the system. The state retirement system provides retirement benefits and also benefits for people who are disabled. Employees leaving City service prior to retirement may withdraw their total contribution with interest.
Deferred Compensation: Employees may directly reduce their taxable income and defer this taxation until retirement or withdrawal of funds by participating in a deferred compensation plan. Deferred compensation allows an employee to defer up to $19,500 of their gross annual salary (more if over age 50) in 2021. The employee chooses how to invest their deferred salary.
Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA): The City makes an annual tax-free contribution of $1,118 for single employees and $2,218 for a family to an HRA account for employees to pay for eligible health expenses.
Flexible Spending Account: This account allows people to put away money, before taxes, into an account to pay for dependent care (up to $5000) or medical expenses (up to $2750).
Life Insurance: The City will purchase for each employee $10,000 worth of group term life insurance.
Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan (MERP): The City contributes $150 into this account per month. The purpose of this account is to pay for eligible medical expenses after retirement.
Worker's Compensation: The City of Tumwater is insured through L&I for employee occupational injuries or illness.
Well City Award: The City's wellness program has been recognized as achieving quality standards of employee health promotion. Employees are encouraged to participate in in-office activities such as Reflexology and Chair massages.
Tuition Reimbursement: The City offers a tuition reimbursement program. Firefighters who complete their Associates or Bachelor's degree may be eligible for a percentage increase in pay.
Hours of Work: Firefighters work a 24 hour with 48 hours off then another 24 hours with 96 hours off within a 4-platoon system. Work schedules may be subject to overtime, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements:
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at time of appointment.
- Must be able to read, utilize a computer (screen, keyboard, etc.), write, and understand various reports, letters, documents, emails, training materials, etc.
- Frequent movement is necessary in a fire station setting, in meetings and/or training, at conferences, ext., for long periods.
- Occasionally ascends/descends stairs and/or ladders; occasionally positions self to reach high/low workspaces; occasionally kneels, stoops, crouches, or crawls.
- Must successfully pass Agency's requirements for fitness for duty test and SCBA/HEPA mask fit test.
- Lifting and or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving up to 150 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Corrected vision is permitted.
- Frequently operates a computer and other office production machinery such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
- Frequently works in an indoor or outdoor setting; occasionally required to work for prolonged periods without rest during disasters or in inclement weather.
- Must successfully pass the Agency's pre-hire background, medical physical, drug screen, and suitability testing.
- Firefighters work in a team environment.
- Shifts are generally 24 hours.
- Training outside the normal shift schedule will be required.
