Full Job Description

The Genetic Counseling Intern provides specialized support to the Oncology Genetic Counselors and the Genetics Coordinator. The Genetic Counseling Intern performs administrative and basic duties necessary to assist in providing counseling and risk assessment for hereditary cancer genetic conditions to patients and families.

This position will not be available until after Genetic Counseling Match Day on April 16, 2025. However, all prospective genetic counseling program students are invited to apply now. After Match Day, we will contact those who do not match, or who did not apply to a genetic counseling program this cycle, to schedule preliminary interviews. Those who apply for this position and then match with a GC program may rescind their applications for this position.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain calm, caring, and compassionate affect when speaking with patients in person and over the phone.
  • Utilize strong organizational and multi-tasking skills to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively within the genetic counseling department and with other provider teams within and outside of Highlands.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree completed or in progress.
  • Intent to apply to a Genetic Counseling Program. No exceptions.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications, such as Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and other web-based applications.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and medical records, test requisitions, pathology reports, and physician correspondence.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Long periods of sitting or standing.
  • Computer use in an office and remote setting.
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work onsite at least one day per week.
  • Private space for remote work when not working onsite.
  • Genetic Counseling Encounter- Records Preparation
    • Review patient records, including family history, pathology, and referral documents.
    • Create family pedigrees via the Invitae Family History Tool.
    • Use templates to prepare customized pre-test and post-test clinic notes.
    • Add patient information to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
    • Update the electronic medical record with ICD-10 codes and family history information.
  • Outside Genetic Testing- Results Triage
    • Review referrals and test results of patients tested outside of Highlands, who have been referred for genetic counseling results discussion.
    • Contact patients to collect and record detailed family history information in the Invitae Family History Tool.
    • Enter orders in the EMR for referral for long-term risk management per patient request.
    • Create informational packets to provide to patients regarding their results.
    • Electronically fax records to referring provider teams.
  • Comply with all Highlands Oncology policies and
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient-related medical information in accordance with HIPAA.
  • Present a professional, neat appearance.
  • Provide additional support to the Genetic Counseling team as needed.
