Assistant City Attorney II ID - 12407

The purpose of this position is to provide legal counsel and advice to City Manager, City departments and City boards and commissions.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews a variety of contracts for various departments to ensure compliance with State procurement statutes, City policies and City Council approved resolutions.
  • Acts as primary legal contact for City real estate matters by negotiating, drafting and reviewing leases, license agreements, deeds, easements, use agreements and land exchange agreements and advising on acquisition and disposition process.
  • Drafts and reviews agreements for non-profits and franchises.
  • Reviews staff reports to City Council and resolutions for assigned departments.
  • Drafts revisions to City ordinance or new ordinances as required by changes in state statutes or direction of Council.
  • Provides legal advice to Boards and Commissions by responding to questions regarding conflicts of interests, quasi-judicial procedures, discretionary review and scope of powers and duties.
  • Represents the City in state trial and appellate court as well as in administrative proceedings.
  • Confers and advises City departments concerning respective duties, powers, functions and obligations.

Education/Experience:

 
Licensing and Certifications:
  • License to practice law in the State of North Carolina; membership in good standing with the North Carolina Bar.
