Reports to: Traffic Signal Supervisor Class Code: 3252
Grade: 26 Group: AFSCME 1058 FLSA: Non-Exempt
Hourly Wage: $26.34
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in maintaining and repairing traffic signal controllers and all other related traffic signal and streetlight systems.
1. Troubleshoots and repairs traffic signal systems and street lighting systems both on the street and in the shop.
2. Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that traffic signals and street lighting systems operate effectively.
3. Uses appropriate electronic test equipment to repair underground and aerial electrical services including 480-volt, 277-volt, 240-volt, and 120-volt systems.
4. Performs emergency service calls to repair and reinstall damaged traffic signals.
5. Safely operates heavy equipment such as trucks, bucket trucks, and other equipment as required.
6. Safely operates a variety of hand and power tools and other equipment including hydraulic pipe benders, pipe threading machines, electronic testing equipment, soldering irons, air hammers, air compressors, and portable AC power units.
7. Modifies and updates existing traffic signals to conform to current standards.
8. Construct forms, pours cement, and performs finishing work for concrete work, installing related cable and conduit as required.
9. Responsible for job daily assignments including completing all required work orders, acting as leader for small crews when required, performing general labor, and insuring that assigned job site has been cleaned and left without safety hazards.
10. Participates in snow removal operations of City streets, crosswalks, and parking lots including spreading salt and sand as required.
11. Responsible for the daily maintenance of assigned City vehicle, including checking and maintaining fluid levels, checking vehicle safety features, and washing and cleaning interiors and exteriors.
12. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order.
13. Observes basic safety practices.
14. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Proven knowledge of electronics, electrical and mechanical principles, and of the operation of electrical and power tools. Working skill in making electrical and mechanical repairs and in report writing and record keeping. Must have the ability to follow moderately complex verbal and written instructions. Some skill in performing moderate to heavy physical labor.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a recognized vocational training course or apprenticeship in electronics or in a closely related area and two years' experience in repairing and maintaining electrical equipment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work involves frequent walking, standing, and driving; as well as lifting and carrying of heavy objects (over 50 pounds). Much of the work is performed from an aerial bucket or ladder at heights up to 50 feet above ground. The majority of the work is conducted outside and may involve regular exposure to adverse conditions and exposure to the rough and uneven terrain.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Class B Illinois Commercial Driver's License within six months of hire.
Ability to work with the general public.
Residency Requirement:
Temporary Modification to Residency Requirement effective November 15, 2021: all newly hired employees shall live anywhere within Winnebago County or anywhere within fifteen (15) miles of Rockford City Hall within six (6) months of the completion of their introductory period.
Effective June 1, 2018, all newly hired employees, including newly hired Department Heads, shall live within the municipal boundaries of City of Rockford within six (6) months of their completion of their introductory period.
Classified employees hired after January 1, 1984, may live anywhere in Winnebago County or anywhere within an area fifteen (15) miles from the Public Safety Building within six (6) months of their date of completion of probation. Employees hired prior to January 1, 1984, shall be subject to their conditions of employment in effect at that time.
