About the position

The Permit Technician I position at the City of Livermore involves providing technical and administrative support in the processing and issuance of permits within the Permit Center of the Community Development Department. This entry-level role requires assisting customers with inquiries related to zoning and building codes, reviewing plans for compliance, and coordinating project routing among various departments. The position is designed for individuals with limited experience in permit processing, offering an opportunity to develop skills in a supportive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Function as the initial contact with applicants both in person and on the telephone.
  • Review documents and drawings for completeness and enter required information in the computer system.
  • Determine the type of permit process being sought and the time frame required for processing.
  • Coordinate processing with applicable staff and applicants.
  • Provide applicants with the date of completion and route applications to appropriate staff for additional processing.
  • Monitor processing time and receive completed reviews, ensuring all necessary documentation is complete.
  • Prepare applications for correction or issuance and compute and collect basic permit service fees.
  • Complete the paperwork to issue permits and conduct research to answer basic building, engineering, and zoning code questions.
  • Develop and provide input on new or improved procedures for permit application processing and tracking.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the permit center computer tracking system.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports, such as plan check logs and inspection schedules.
  • Review and process program applications and contracts pertaining to housing and human services programs.
  • Log neighborhood preservation complaints and appeals and assist in scheduling hearings.

Requirements

  • Entry-level position requiring under 1 year of experience in a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of zoning and building codes.
