About the position

The 911 Dispatcher position at the City of Richardson involves receiving and processing emergency requests for police, fire, and medical services. The role requires effective communication, multitasking, and the ability to operate telecommunications equipment under high-stress conditions. Dispatchers are responsible for deploying public safety units, providing pre-arrival emergency medical instructions, and maintaining accurate records of all activities. This position requires working various shifts, including holidays and weekends, and may involve training new employees.

Responsibilities

  • Answer multi-line telephones including E 911 lines.
  • Communicate effectively, courteously, and clearly in English, verbally and in writing.
  • Simultaneously listen to and comprehend telephone, radio, and interoffice communications while processing calls for service.
  • Operate multi-channel public safety radio system, including interoperable communications with other agencies.
  • Correctly process and record requests for police, fire, and medical services.
  • Assign appropriate public safety personnel to routine and emergency calls for service.
  • Document all activity, location, and status in the Computer-Aided Dispatch system.
  • Provide pre-arrival emergency medical instructions following department protocol.
  • Read and accurately interpret electronic maps to locate and track responders.
  • Operate computers and websites to access information requested by public safety personnel.
  • Work in a confined area for 12+ hours and remain seated for long periods of time.
  • Monitor and identify activations of various alarm systems.
  • Safely operate a wide range of equipment, e.g., door monitors and locks, printers, voice recorders, etc.
  • Train new employees and prepare training documentation.
  • Prepare incident reports and maintain various files.
  • Attend training schools/seminars and other city-related events.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate required.
  • CPR certification and Emergency Medical Dispatch certification required within one year of hire.
  • TCOLE Basic Telecommunicator Proficiency Certificate and TX Telecommunicator License required or must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Texas Driver's License, Class C, required.
  • Must pass a background investigation that meets all local, state, and federal requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 2 years of recent work history in a customer service environment preferred.
  • Bachelor or Associate degree preferred.
  • 1 year of recent training with an accredited learning institution in computer operations and data entry preferred.
